Transition group for Circular Construction

The Constructing Circularity project aimed to transform the Nordic construction industry, which is responsible for 40% of global emissions and energy use. Coordinated by the Transition Group Constructing Circularity, this initiative seeks to reduce the industry's environmental impact by promoting circular economy practices across the sector. This was the very first Transition Group initiated.

Project Background

The construction industry in the Nordic region is large but fragmented, involving many stakeholders like architects, contractors, and developers. While various circular initiatives are underway, better coordination and standardization are needed to drive a full transition.

Key Goals and Insights

The group identified major challenges, including the need for:

  • Standardized CO2e measurement tools across the value chain
  • Circular work processes that are profitable and scalable
  • Improved knowledge-sharing on circular construction
  • Concrete ideas include mapping material flows, developing LCA tools, and collaborating with research institutions to enhance emissions assessments.

Next Steps

Based on the work done in the group, NCH initated Nordic Circular Construction project based on the findings in this groups work.
