Circularity Gap Report 2023

  • Circular gap
Global circularity has declined to 7.2%, down from 8.6% in 2020, primarily due to increased virgin material extraction and accumulation in long-term stocks. The report outlines 16 solutions across food systems, the built environment, manufactured goods, and mobility to address environmental and social challenges. It categorizes countries into three profiles—Shift, Grow, and Build—offering tailored circular pathways. The report concludes that a circular economy could reverse overshot planetary boundaries and reduce global material extraction by one-third, emphasizing collaboration between public and private sectors.
