The Nordic Circular Hotspot is proud to represent the Nordic circular community at Expo 2020 Dubai, where we will participating in the European Circular Economy Platform’s program on January 17 and 18. Expo 2020 Dubai's theme, "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future", is based on the belief that bringing the world together can catalyse an exchange of new perspectives and inspire action to deliver real-life solutions to real-world challenges.

World Expos, officially known as International Registered Exhibitions, are a global gathering of nations dedicated to finding solutions to pressing challenges of our time by offering a journey inside a universal theme through engaging and immersive activities. For 170 years, World Expos have provided a platform to showcase the greatest innovations that have shaped the world we live in today.

The Nordic Circular Hotspot will be participating in two sessions during the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform’s programme on January 18. Cathrine Barth will be present in Dubai to moderate the session «Enabling Circular Electronics», while Einar Kleppe Holthe will be speaking online during the «Making Circularity Work for People, City and Regions» event. Making Circularity Work for People, Cities and Regions
10:00 - 11:30 (CET+), Finnish Pavilion

The transition to a circular economy is in full swing in Europe. Cities and regions play a crucial role as hubs of material flows and innovation. The event held by the ECESP will demonstrate the collaborative approach of European stakeholders, highlighting the role of cities and regions networks (ACR+, CCRI), financing institutions (EIB) and legislators (European Commission and European Parliament). We will hear directly from leading cities and regions (Scotland, Navarra, Western Macedonia, Greece) about their pathways and monitoring of circular economy developments in their territories. The event will show that the EU Green Deal is an overarching strategy complemented by the coherent cities and regions strategies duly supported by the financing programs.

Enabling Circular Electronics
11:30 - 13:00 (CET+3), Finish Pavilion

Digitialization surrounds us everywhere. This is accompanied by an immense increase in reliance on devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Not only in Europe but also in other World regions, electrical devices are gaining more and more importance. The event aims at finding answers to the question is: "Who can enable circular electronics and how can the re-skilling and upskilling work for different stakeholder groups?" from different stakeholder perspectives.

Both events are coordinated, produced and broadcasted live by Natural State, spearheaded by Martin Hagen.

The Finish Pavilion by JKMM Architects

The Finish Pavilion

The Finnish Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai showcases the country's deep connection with nature and sustainability, contributing to its high quality of life. Titled "Snow Cape", the pavilion designed by JKMM Architects subtly evokes Finnish natural settings through materiality and atmosphere while embodying the principles of circular economy championed by the Nordic country.

The circular economy imperatives have informed the construction of the pavilion, for which the majority of the materials were sourced locally, thus reducing the environmental impact of transportation. Moreover, the design took into consideration the structure's life after the Expo, with the project set to remain in place for an additional five years, after which it will be dismantled and its materials recycled or reused.
